Victimization Rates in the United States

Por: Juanita Mape Salcedo

The following chart illustrates the victimization rates per 1.000 residents, classified by communities depending on the place of their dwelling and the rates in the years of 1980, 2000 and 2004. The chart is divided by the type of crime; one of them is the property crime and the other the violent crime. Nevertheless, its format is not the same, in the first one are the number of cases, and in the second one the percentages.

Overall, we can observe that the lower crime rates are presented in the year of 2004, especially in the rural areas, with a percentage of 2.0 and 17 number of cases in the U.S. On the other hand, the highest rate is shown in the year of 1980 in the urban areas with a percentage of 7.0 and 61 cases in the U.S. Therefore, contrasting these categories it could be evidenced a huge difference between cases and percentages, which demonstrates an impoverished since the year of 1980 until 2004.

Even though radicals tried to foster those situations, we can observe a lot of fluctuations in the data. For instance, urban and rural areas show a decrease in the number of cases and percentages, while suburban areas maintain 41 number of cases in the years of 2000 and 2004. Actually, the chart demonstrates how the data of the total in U.S prevails, due to 18 cases were improved until the year of 2004.

In conclusion, this chart has an important role in the development of a city or country because it is used to inform people of the crime rates in places near their dwellings. Also, investigations make use of it in order to give a solution to this problematic, demonstrating a progress of the rates, mostly in places with more crimes, like boulevards, corridors, slums etc..
